DESCRIPTION

  1. Transumanza Lucana (Transhumance in Basilicata region, Italy)

On 11 August 2023 at the “Rifugio la Casermetta” in Tito (PZ), the “Fuorisentiero” Association promoted an event dedicated to the presentation of “Vie di Transumanza”, the new Cultural Route recognised by the Council of Europe. “Vie di Transumanza” is the result of the collective work of numerous European organisations including Universities, Geosites, Associations and Research Institutions, which have recognised themselves in the common name of the association “Transhumance Trails and Rural Routes”. On 18 June 2023, the candidature of the ‘Transhumance Trails’ as European Cultural Route, the No. 47 in the history of European routes, was officially approved. As the Fuorisentiero association we are a member of TT&RR, contributing our expertise and research on transhumance. The purpose of the event was to present the Transhumance Trails project to the Lucanian community, as well as the first real cultural path in Basilicata recognised to date.

EVENT PROGRAMME

– from 9 a.m. Visit to the transhumance pasture of podoliche cattle in the mountains, on the slopes of Schiena Rasa, together with the Santorsa family. We will walk part of the transhumance route, now recognised as a Cultural Route, and observe the daily work that goes on in the mountain pastures.

– 1 p.m. Refreshment at the Refuge with typical products from the Lucanian rural tradition.

– 16:00. Press conference on the European Cultural Route “Vie di Transumanza” with representatives of the TT&RR association. During the conference, the first information board/signpost of the ‘Transumanza Lucana’ was posted.

3. Transhumance in Lucania

A unique experience in Basilicata: a long walk from the Schiena d’Asino mountain range in Tito (PZ) to the clearings of Tolve (PZ), following the ancient rite of transhumance – a UNESCO World Heritage Site from 2019 and already narrated in Basilicata in the 1st century BC – with a large herd of Podolica cows in tow. We will have the experience of participating in one of the very few remaining long-distance migrations in Basilicata, which, according to ancient tradition, moved the flocks and herds from the plains on the Apulian border to the heights of the Lucanian Apennines in the summer, only to return in the autumn along the historic sheep-tracks used by breeders and farmers, many of which are unfortunately no longer in use.

The Transumanza Lucana is the first path in Basilicata included in the ‘Vie di transumanza’ (transhumance routes), recognised by the Council of Europe as ‘European Cultural Itineraries’.

1 DAY

From the La Casermetta Refuge we move towards the Pantano di Pignola (PZ) Lake Reserve, crossing the sheep-tracks inherent in the Zanfroneta and Fossacupa woods, in the middle of the National Park.

2 DAY

At dawn we leave Lago Pantano in the direction of Tolve, crossing the town of Potenza, the locality of San Luca Branca up to the old mill in the direction of Brindisi Montagna, then fording the Basento river and continuing in the direction of Tolve and Oppido Lucano.
